Our Relationship with Pinterest

We have a love/hate rea;tionship with Pinterest!  Yes, it is a great tool that can be used to provide inspiration for a wide variety of things.  (For us, it is events)  It’s a place where you can go to collect ideas for your event and to communicate your ideas to the team helping you out.  It would be so nice to get exactly what you want, but so many people forget the reality – you will need to make sacrifices.  Love it or hate it, Pinterest is here to stay.  We talked to some of our professionals to get an idea of what the best practices are for using it effectively in event planning.  Here’s what they had to say:

What they LOVE about Pinterest:

“Pinterest is very helpful when it comes to educating clients. There are so many checklists that you can find that make my job in sales so much easier! When I get a client that comes to me with a good base, the communication seems to run a lot smoother.”

-Tiffany Sutton, Sales Director

“Pinterest is an excellent tool to communicate the look that a client is looking for. As a designer, I know that there are somethings that you really just can’t explain. Pinterest really helps us to overcome this obstacle and get a clear line of communication.”

-Jodie Rust, Floral and Decor Director

“A well-structured board on Pinterest is something that is very useful in helping me piece together an event. I get excited when I get to work with people who have a clear vision of what they want and are able to visually represent that to me. It really seems to make the process smoother.”

-Kimberly Suttlemyer, Sales Manager

What they HATE about Pinterest:

“Pinterest can be misleading because so many images depict an event that isn’t doable in real time, especially for large scale parties! I think it’s great to dream big, but I always feel like the ‘bad guy’ when I have to explain to a client why their idea isn’t logistically sound.”

-Tiffany Sutton, Sales Director

“If there were one thing that I hated about Pinterest, it would be when people show me cluttered boards. The purpose of communicating what you want is so that we get a clear idea of what you want your event to look like. Showing your event planners boards that communicate conflicting styles can foster avoidable confusion. It’s really helpful when you go back through your boards and remove the ideas that you’ve decided against.”

-Jodie Rust, Floral and Decor Director

“Pinterest can portray an unrealistic view to the avg consumer. It paints a picture in the consumer’s mind that reflects the styles of the rich and famous. It’s honestly not feasible to make a $500 centerpiece fit into a $50 budget without crushing someone’s expectations. I know that budgets can be hard, and not everyone has an inherent knowledge of the price of florals. That’s why we’re here though, ask us and we can help you! ”

-Kimberly Suttlemyer, Sales Manager
Salt Lake City Catering is unique because you get a wide range of clientele. Utah Food Services gets clients with tiny budgets, and clients with large budgets. We have gotten really good at making things work within different budgets, but understanding that you may have to compromise on some of your ideas will help to make the process easier.
