3 Tips for the Perfect Barbecue
July is all about barbecues, but if you’re looking to impress and don’t have the budget to hire someone for barbecue catering, our chefs developed three tips to help you wow your guests the next time you find yourself hosting.
Tip One: Get creative with your sides.
Our catering chefs are constantly combining different flavors for an exciting new experience every time. Here is a nice garden salad 100% from scratch sure to impress your friends, family, coworkers, or whoever happens to stop by for some grub.
Beet and Roasted Corn Garden Salad
You will need:
Salad:
4 Large Yellow Beets
2 Ears of Sweet Corn
4 Medium Heirloom Tomatoes
2 Poblano Peppers
½ Red Onion
½ Cup Crumbled Aged Cheddar
1 Bunch of Fresh Parsley
2 Minced Garlic Cloves
Dressing:
¼ Cup Fresh Lemon Juice
¼ Cup Red Wine Vinegar
¼ Cup Olive Oil
Salt and Pepper to Taste
Steps:
- Turn Grill onto medium heat
- Place beets in boiling water
- Rub Oil onto Corn and Peppers and place on Grill
- Grill corn until lightly charred, and remove from heat
- Grill Poblano peppers until lightly charred and skin is soft
- Remove Beets when fork can pierce them without resistance
- When Beets cool, peel the skin off
- Julienne onions, mince garlic, chop parsley, cut tomatoes into wedges of 8
- Skin and deseed peppers
- Cut Kernels off of the corn
- Combine all solid ingredients in a bowl
- In a separate bowl, combine all ingredients for the dressing
- Toss salad in dressing
- Enjoy!
Tip Two: Keep it Classy
Hot dogs are a backyard classic, but don’t confuse the term: “classic” with “boring.” Play with your toppings. Some of our favorite combos include:
El Perro:
Your choice of hot dog, bratwurst or veggie dog topped with: sliced avocado, diced tomatoes, jalapenos, fresh cilantro and purple onion.
The Avo-bacon Bun:
Your choice of hot dog, bratwurst or veggie dog topped with: a garlic aioli, bacon, and avocado.
The Euro Brat:
Your choice of hot dog, bratwurst or veggie dog topped with: a garlic aioli, parmesan, and Frites.
The Med Dog:
Your choice of hot dog, bratwurst or veggie dog topped with: Feta, chopped onion, diced tomatoes, cilantro and sour cream (or Tzatziki Sauce).
Tip Three: Finish Strong
As much as we love ice cream, berries seem to be the perfect complement to end a summer meal: not to mention, it’s practically unpatriotic not partake in a red, white, and blue celebration. To gain instant superhero status, simply serve a trifle layered with berries, cake, and cream of your choice. Simply irresistible is an understatement. My preference of late is strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, chocolate pastry cream, whipped cream and chocolate cake. Individual glasses also work well for a beautiful presentation. Easier yet, call Utah Food Services barbecue catering division and we will do the catering for you…and the dishes.
