Thanksgiving with the Salt Lake City Mission

We Care – We Share, it’s that simple.  For the past 20 years, Utah Food Services and our community partners cater a traditional Thanksgiving feast for Salt Lake City’s homeless.  We kick off the holiday season at the Vivint Smart Home Arena where a volunteer army including Utah Jazz players dish up turkey, all the fixings, and most importantly pie and more pie.  UFS donates food to the Salt Lake City Mission all year long year but hands down, it’s our Salt Lake City catering team’s favorite event.  Check out last year’s celebration:  https://youtu.be/ruFgC2jPZU4

The people who benefit from this event are not individuals who refuse to change. Their gratitude for a warm meal is always heartwarming to witness. I remember one year, witnessing people rapidly searching through donated clothes for something to fit. The most beautiful part of this, however, was the little girl picking hangers up from the ground and putting them back in their place. One small act to remind us that being thankful isn’t always shown in a uniform way. Its inside of how we take care of the people who take care of us and how we demonstrate kindness, even when it’s all we can give. Preparing food is easy for us, it’s the smiles and gratitude that keeps us coming back year after year.

“We care, we share” is the promise that these community partners make to the Salt Lake City homeless population annually when the weather begins to become more and more fridged. The goal of this program is to provide Thanksgiving dinner to over 3,250 individuals experiencing homelessness, as well as, clothing and supplies to help them through the cold winter season.
